The Most Important Thing I Did Today

March 20, 2014

Today, I did some cool things. I did some work on my new company’s web site, then launched this new venture. I attended my first meeting of the state’s Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee as an official member. I completed my weekly work for Sunday’s church service. I met with Ohio State Fair folks and others to plan this year’s Civil War encampment during the fair. All cool stuff, but by no means the most important thing I did today.

It only took about five minutes this morning. It wasn’t hard to do. It didn’t cost much. And, it required no great skill. But, it was the most important thing I did all day. This morning, I took that few minutes and sent a card to a friend beginning her struggle with cancer. Just a few minutes of time. Just a few dollars for a card and stamp. A small gesture of support, but the most important thing I did all day.

We don’t send cards much anymore. I know I don’t. It is far too convenient to send an email, comment on Facebook or tweet our support and thoughts. Nothing wrong with that, but how much more meaningful is it to take the time and effort to send a card in the mail? Back in 2008 when my father passed away, I was overwhelmed by the number of cards I received from friends. Each one was truly special and meaningful. They were a source of comfort, much more so than an electronic message could ever be. In fact, each year for several years I would pull out all of those cards on the anniversary of my father’s death and reread them. They still brought comfort and helped me to realize how blessed I am to have so many wonderful friends. While I know each and every card sent was done so with love and sincerity, I wonder if my friends realize how much of an impact they had for me? How much those cards meant when received and thereafter? I hope they did realize then and still do today.

I hope I have more days where I can say I did something important. Truly important instead of just a list of accomplishments. Because I know, when someone does something important for me, it matters more than anything else that day.
